Over 30 residents of Delta 1 in Greater Noida have fallen ill over the past few days with symptoms of vomiting, diarrhoea and fever. Residents have alleged that the water supplied to their homes was contaminated by sewage and appeared yellow in colour. However, the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) has denied claims of large-scale contamination of drinking water.
When Did The Problem Of Contamination start?
According to residents, the problem of contaminated drinking water has persisted for the last three days. Pankaj Nagar, president of the Resident Welfare Association of Delta 1, alleged that the GNIDA did not take any action despite repeated complaints from the residents. Singh further said that this was not the first incidence of large-scale contamination of drinking water. “Earlier also, around 15 residents from A Block fell sick after drinking contaminated water,” Nagar was quoted by The Indian Express as saying.
Vijay Singh, a resident of C-200 in Delta 1, said that the water supply was completely yellow and dirty. “It looks like sewage has mixed with the water. My children are suffering from diarrhoea, and I had to take them to the hospital,” he was quoted by India Today. Another resident, Rukmani Singh Bhati, reported a foul smell in the supply line and said that her children fell ill because of the water.
Health officials from the nearby medical hospital have confirmed that several residents required medical attention. Narayan Kishore, the Medical Superintendent of Dankaur Primary Health Centre, said that around 30 people, including children, were examined at a local camp organised in the area. “Five to six people complained of stomach pain. At first glance, it seems they fell sick after drinking contaminated water. The symptoms were mild, and another medical camp will be organised,” he said.

GNIDA Inspects The Affected Area
Officials from the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority inspected the affected area and later issued a statement that the problem was limited to one or two houses and has since been resolved. The authorities further said that a leaking pipe was repaired and water samples were collected for testing. “There was a problem in the water supply connection at one house, and a leak was found at another location. Repairs were carried out immediately, and no evidence of sewage mixing was found,” PTI quoted a GNIDA official as saying.
Following the inspection, the GNIDA has ordered random water testing across Greater Noida to avoid such an incident from occurring again.
