Kanpur News: The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has proposed five new corridors for the expansion of Kanpur Metro, aiming to enhance connectivity across the city and surrounding rural areas, including parts of Unnao.
The expansion plan, covering a total length of 52 kilometres, has been included in the state government’s Vision-2051 blueprint, with a funding request of Rs 4,250 crore submitted for approval.
The proposed corridors include:
-5.44 km from IIT to Mandhana
-16.6 km from Jhakarkati to Ruma
-3.8 km from CSA to Ganga Barrage
-20.4 km from Mall Road to Shuklaganj (Unnao)
-8.75 km from Vijay Nagar to Bhontikheda
Officials say the expansion will provide metro connectivity in all four directions of the city, offering improved access to key locations such as Ramaipur, Chakeri, Ganga Barrage, Bidhanu, and Panki. The project is expected to benefit around 45 lakh people, particularly those who commute daily from Mandhana, Bhontikheda, and Unnao, where traffic congestion remains a major issue.
Currently, the metro is operational between IIT and Central Station on a 23.8 km corridor extending to Naubasta, while construction continues on another 8.4 km corridor between CSA and Barra-8. With both corridors combined, the ongoing metro work spans approximately 32.2 km.
The new corridors, once approved, will extend Kanpur Metro’s coverage to nearly 75 km over the next decade. “The proposed corridors are part of the Vision-2051 plan. Once approval is granted, a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared to initiate construction,” said Metro Public Relations Officer Panchanan Mishra.
The action plan was drafted by a committee headed by Divisional Commissioner K Vijayendra Pandian, with members including the Municipal Commissioner, KDA Vice President, and the District Magistrate. After a presentation to the Chief Minister, the project received in-principle approval for inclusion in Vision-2051.
“The expansion will significantly improve urban mobility and bring relief to a large population,” Pandian said.
