In a major push to modernise the city's power infrastructure, Kanpur Electricity Supply Company Limited (KESCO) has initiated work to upgrade 92 electricity substations by integrating them with the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. The project, worth Rs 234 crore, aims to strengthen real-time monitoring and remote control capabilities of the city's power supply.
Currently, only 14 out of KESCO’s 106 substations are operated using the SCADA system. The remaining 92 will be brought under this advanced framework in a phased manner over the next 24 months. So far, the implementing agency, Mega Win Company (Tamil Nadu), has completed surveys at 15 substations. The remaining surveys are expected to be completed by August, with on-ground implementation beginning in September.

What is SCADA?
SCADA is a cutting-edge technology used in the power sector that enables centralised, real-time monitoring and control of the power grid, substations, and distribution networks. It allows operators to:
-Detect faults (like low voltage or supply issues) instantly
-Minimise outages by isolating specific transformers or feeders
-Access real-time data on power distribution across different areas
-Eliminate the need for manual intervention at substations
Benefits for Consumers:
-Faster fault detection: Underground or technical faults can be pinpointed immediately.
-No full shutdowns: Only the affected sections (transformers/feeders) will be shut down for repairs.
-Real-time updates: Authorities will have immediate access to power supply status across localities.
“The implementing agency is conducting surveys to connect all substations to the SCADA system. Survey work for 15 substations is already complete, and the project will enter the execution phase from September,” said Devendra Kumar Verma, Media Incharge of KESCO.

At present, KESCO supplies a record 783 MW of electricity to over 7.5 lakh consumers in Kanpur. The integration of SCADA is expected to significantly improve efficiency, transparency, and consumer service in power management.
