In several newly developed areas surrounding Kanpur, more than five lakh homes have been receiving electricity through makeshift arrangements using bamboo poles for years. This workaround existed because KESCO (Kanpur Electricity Supply Company) was unable to officially electrify these colonies due to regulatory constraints. Meanwhile, private builders sold plots in these regions promising developed infrastructure, but the lack of authorised electrification left residents struggling.

However, with a change in regulations by the Electricity Regulatory Commission, KESCO will now provide electricity under the 70 Feet Per Square Scheme in areas where supply is currently managed via bamboo poles. Residents can now apply to get legal electric poles installed by paying a prescribed fee.

According to KESCO officials, any consumer from these affected areas—such as Naubasta, Sanigawan, Hira Nagar, New Azad Nagar, Radhapuram, Bihari Tola, Shivpuram, Sundarnagar, Daheli Sujanpur, Koyla Nagar, Ahirwan, Chakeri, Maswanpur, and Panki—can now benefit from this scheme. Poles will be installed and proper supply connections given under the 70 feet square plan.

Additionally, those who previously obtained unauthorised connections using bamboo poles may face action—but only upon receiving a complaint, clarified officials. In such cases, consumers will be asked to pay charges as per the new rules.

To ease the process, KESCO Media In-Charge Devendra Kumar Verma stated that the 70 feet square scheme will soon be available on the Jhatpat Portal, allowing residents to apply online and receive faster service.

KESCO Managing Director Samuel Pal N said, “We’ve begun implementation as per the new instructions. In areas where power is supplied through bamboo poles, residents can now get proper connections under the 70 feet square scheme. However, this facility will be offered only by KESCO. If complaints are received about unauthorised connections, action will be taken and charges recovered according to new regulations.”
