Guided by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the mission of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham has emerged as a powerful engine for Uttar Pradesh's economy. Since its inauguration by the Prime Minister in December 2021, the sacred site has welcomed more than 252.8 million devotees, generating an estimated economic boost of Rs 1.25 trillion for the state.

Vishwa Bhushan Mishra, the Chief Executive Officer of the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, stated that the corridor's construction has not only transformed the image of Kashi but has also spurred an unprecedented increase in economic activity across Uttar Pradesh.

A Catalyst For Local And Regional Growth

The continuous influx of devotees and tourists from across India and the world is creating large-scale employment opportunities. Local traders, shopkeepers, boatmen, priests, street vendors, and hoteliers are the direct beneficiaries of this religious tourism boom. This economic upswing is accelerating development not only in Varanasi but across the entire Purvanchal region.

According to data, each tourist visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Dham spends, on average, over Rs 5,000. The Rs 1.25 trillion economic impact figure is based on a conservative estimate of Rs 4,000 per person, highlighting the significant financial inflow into the state's economy over the last three and a half years.

The "Ripple Effect" On UP's Religious Circuit

The economic benefits extend far beyond Varanasi. A significant portion of the visitors are from outside the state, with 70 per cent of devotees coming from South India and approximately 15 per cent from other states and districts.

After their pilgrimage to Kashi, many of these devotees continue their journey to other sacred sites in Uttar Pradesh, including:

  • Vindhyavasini Dham
  • Tirthraj Prayag
  • Ayodhya
  • Mathura
  • Chitrakoot
  • Naimisharanya

This creates a powerful ripple effect, contributing to an increase in the GDP of the entire state as tourism revenue spreads across multiple religious circuits.

The "Kashi Model" For State-Wide Development

The success of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham is attributed to a multi-faceted approach under the Yogi government, including an improved security environment, the widening of roads, beautification of the ghats, and excellent road connectivity from the airport to the banks of the Ganga. This has attracted both domestic and international tourists, giving UP's image a new identity on the national and international stage.

CEO Vishwa Bhushan Mishra added that the new benchmark for development set by Kashi has become a model for the entire country. The Yogi government is now making religious tourism a powerful tool for state-wide development, with projects in Ayodhya, Mathura, Chitrakoot, Naimisharanya, and Vindhyachal also progressing at a rapid pace. This model of "religious urban development," pioneered in Kashi, is now being implemented across Uttar Pradesh.
