A video has gone viral on social media showing the Sub-Inspector of Mahanagar police station, Lucknow for accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to remove the name of an accused from a gangrape case. The video was part of a trap laid by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Corruption Organisation (ACO), which arrested the accused SI. 

In the 1:20-minute viral video, which went viral on social media, SI Dhananjay Singh was seen sitting at his desk while a man handed him a bundle of cash. The SI was seen placing the bundles of Rs 500 notes into a file, covering them amongst a pile of documents and tucking the file aside.

According to the officials quoted by the Times of India, Sub-Inspector (SI) Dhananjay Singh allegedly accepted the bribe from Prateek Gupta, the owner of British School of Language. Gupta was accused of gangrape by his former private secretary. 

The bribe was allegedly demanded in exchange for removing his name from Case No. 242/25, which had been registered under Sections 70, 352, and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The SI allegedly accepted a bribe of Rs 2 lakh, comprising 400 notes of Rs 500 each, from Prateek to file a closure report in a gang rape case in favour of him.

How Was The SI Caught?

  • Detailing the entire operation, Inspector Vinod Kumar of ACO said that on the morning of October 29, the trap team assembled at the anti-corruption office, Lucknow Mandal, and proceeded to the DM’s camp office to obtain an official witness. 

  • Two senior assistants from the Public Works Department (PWD), Dheeraj Kumar Srivastava and Saurabh Singh, were deputed as independent witnesses. The team first met Prateek at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan, Gomtinagar, where he produced the bribe amount. 

  • Subsequently, the notes were treated with the phenolphthalein powder for forensic marking. The forensic department asked Gupta to hand over the money to Singh. 

  • After all these pre-trap formalities were set, the team of ACO took strategic positions in plain clothes at the police outpost of the Paper Mill Colony. 

  • Around 7:30 PM, the accused arrived at the outpost arrived at the outpost on a motorcycle.

  • Subsequently, he signalled Gupta to put the cash inside a file, which the latter complied with.

  • Moments later, the anti-corruption team, monitoring the exchange through audio transmission devices, pounced on Singh.

  • Upon closer investigation, the same bundle of Rs 500 notes laced with phenolpthalein powder was recovered from the possession of Singh. A sodium carbonate test conducted on Singh's hands turned pink, further verifying his contact with the treated notes.
