In a major crackdown on the illegal trade of narcotic and counterfeit drugs in the capital, the Food and Drug Administration Department (FSDA) conducted surprise raids on four major wholesale pharmacies in the Aminabad Medicine Market on Tuesday. The operation led to the seizure of narcotic medicines worth Rs 3 lakh, creating panic among drugstore owners — many of whom shut down their shops and fled.

According to FSDA Assistant Commissioner Brijesh Kumar, multiple teams have been deployed across the city under the leadership of Drug Inspectors Sandesh Maurya, Vivek Kumar Singh, Ashok Kumar (Unnao), and Anita Kuril (Sitapur). The raids are part of an ongoing campaign following alerts from the Central Narcotics Bureau.

During the operation, samples of 11 medicines were collected and sent to the Uttar Pradesh Laboratory Centre in Agra for testing. Officials stated that none of the four pharmacies could produce valid purchase or sale records for the seized medicines. In one of the stores, drugs were reportedly being sold without the presence of a licensed pharmacist — a serious violation. Consequently, the sale and purchase of medicines at the premises have been suspended until further verification.

From M/s Om Sai Ram Medicos alone, narcotic medicines worth Rs 2.60 lakh were confiscated, while another Rs 40,000 worth of unregulated drugs were seized from M/s Shri Banke Bihari Pharma. At M/s Dawa Choice Pharmacy Pvt Ltd, serious irregularities were noted, including the absence of authorised personnel (Pooja Tiwari) and non-compliance with billing norms. The firm has been barred from selling medicines until further notice.

The FSDA team also inspected M/s Guruji Pharmaceutical, where several discrepancies were found in both the medicine stock and the billing documentation.

Authorities have also received complaints about fake syrups being sold under the labels of reputed pharmaceutical brands. A separate investigation is underway to identify and prosecute those involved. Brijesh Kumar assured that strict action will be taken against all those found guilty, adding, “Such offenders will not be spared.”
