The Uttar Pradesh government plans to launch a new Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) connecting Kanpur, the state’s industrial hub, with the capital, Lucknow. The end-to-end journey between the two cities is expected to take 30 minutes. The route will also pass through Unnao, with a travel time of around 10 minutes to the next destination, Kanpur. The project is planned to be taken up under the Namo Bharat Rail Corridor scheme.
 
According to a report by Jagran.com, the RRTS has sent an email to District Magistrate Gaurang Rathi regarding the proposed rapid rail route. The District Magistrate has given his permission for the work, but clarified that no formal proposal has been received so far. He added that land identification and acquisition for the route will begin once the proposal is formally submitted.

Lucknow-Kanpur RRTS: Route

The RRTS has also shared a route map with the District Magistrate for the planned rapid rail service. According to the plan:
 
- The corridor is expected to link the Amausi station with Kanpur Nawabganj Metro Station.
 
- On the way, it will pass through Banthra, Nawabganj, Bashirganj and Unnao railway stations.
 
- The map also indicates that the route will pass through Unnao and will stop at Unnao station, Bashirganj and Nawabganj.
 
- A dedicated new track is proposed to be constructed for the service.

Over 22 Villages To Be Impacted

If the route is built, land acquisition is likely to affect areas across three tehsils, Hasanganj, Purva and Sadar. This is expected to impact over 22 villages, including Sohramau, Nawabganj, Mahanaura, Ajgain, Sonic, Asha Kheda, Vashiratganj, Murtazanagar, Dahi Chandpur Gajouli, Shahar, Akrampur, Magarwara, Saraiya and Peeparkheda. 
 
The RRTS project first proposed the plan in 2015, when the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) submitted the plan to the Ministry of Railways. Subsequently, in 2021, a draft was prepared by the then Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Deepak Kumar.
