The Department of Orthopaedics at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) organised the 8th Arthroscopy Conclave on Saturday at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Scientific Convention Centre. The event focused on new medical technologies, particularly the use of synthetic grafts in treating deep wounds.

Prof Ajay Singh, Vice Chancellor of Uttar Pradesh Medical University, Saifai, said synthetic grafts are proving highly effective in completely healing severe injuries. Unlike conventional procedures that require removing tissue or ligaments from another part of the patient’s body, synthetic grafts eliminate the need for multiple wounds, reduce pain, lower infection risk, and enable faster recovery. Patients can be discharged quickly and usually recover within six to seven weeks. The technique is especially beneficial for children under 18 and the elderly.

Dr Ashish Kumar, Head of Orthopaedics at KGMU and conclave organiser, explained that synthetic grafts are useful in treating wounds caused by cancer, burns, or accidents. “Earlier, ligaments or muscles had to be transplanted from another body part, causing additional pain. With synthetic grafts, tissues regenerate easily at the wound site without creating a second wound,” he said.

Highlighting benefits for athletes, Prof Shantanu Kumar noted that arthroscopy is a “panacea” for sportspersons as it enables precise treatment inside joints, faster recovery, minimal pain, and quicker return to the field.

As part of the conclave, a live cadaveric surgery session was conducted where expert surgeons performed seven arthroscopic procedures. Around 100 doctors participated in the workshop. According to Dr Mayank Mahendra, biodegradable patches are now being used to treat rotator cuff injuries, providing relief without permanent implants.

The conclave was inaugurated by KGMU Vice Chancellor Prof Sonia Nityanand. Other dignitaries present included Dr Navneet Chauhan (Head, Anatomy Department), Dr KK Singh (Spokesperson), Dr Tulika Chandra (Head, Blood and Transfusion Medicine), Dr Vijay Kumar (Head, Plastic Surgery), and Dr JD Rawat (Head, Pediatric Surgery).
