The UP Cyber Crime Police have launched investigations into two separate fraud cases in which retired government officers in Lucknow were duped of over Rs 30 lakh by callers impersonating officials of security and government agencies.

In the first case, Gaya Prasad Tripathi, a retired teacher from Rajajipuram, was cheated of Rs 12.57 lakh by a man claiming to be an inspector posted at the ATS headquarters in Lucknow. Tripathi stated in his complaint that on November 7, the caller accused him of having links with Pakistan and claimed that an individual named Afzal Khan from Delhi had reported his number for suspicious activity. The accused allegedly intimidated him with threats of arrest and, under the guise of ‘saving’ him from action, coerced him into transferring the money.

Inspector Brijesh Yadav said a case has been registered, and Rs 2.5 lakh from the fraudulent transactions has been frozen. Police are tracing the accused using IP address details.

In a similar incident, Tej Bahadur Singh, a retired railway officer from Alambagh, was duped of Rs 18 lakh on November 9. The fraudster initially posed as an official from the Information Department and claimed that an Aadhaar card linked to Singh’s account had been used for a terror-related transaction. He was then directed to take a call purportedly from the ATS, with the caller ID displaying a forged ATS logo.

The second caller accused Singh of transactions with terrorists and claimed a case had been registered in Jammu and Kashmir. The victim was kept under ‘digital arrest’ and was coerced into transferring Rs 18 lakh in two instalments. The accused also showed him fake documents to support the threats. Upon realising he had been deceived, Singh approached the police.
