Mahakumbh 2025: As Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj is gearing up for a grand organisation of the religious event Mahakumbh in the early months of 2025, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd, a distribution entity owned by the state government, has announced that it will provide uninterrupted power during the course of the 45-day mega cultural event.
The UPPCL has also released the roadmap of the preparations it is making for this humongous task. It stated that the preparation will include massive infrastructure upgradation, including the construction of 182 km of HT lines and 1,405 km of LT lines.
UPPCL chairman Ashish Kumar Goyel informed that the corporation has established many substations to meet the requirement. “To meet the anticipated unprecedented electricity demand, the Corporation has established 170 new substations (11/0.4 kV with 400 kVA capacity), 14 substations (11/0.4 kV with 250 kVA capacity), and 128 substations (11/0.4 kV with 100 kVA capacity),” Goyel was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.
“Over 67,000 LED streetlights and 425,000 camp connections have been installed to light up the iconic pilgrimage site,” he added. The corporation has even deployed high-tech RMU (Ring Main Unit) systems that are capable of restoring the electricity supply within 30 seconds of a power outage. The corporation has upgraded the urban power infrastructure significantly, including the construction of a new 2x10 MVA capacity substation in the city and four new 33 kV lines to serve high-demand zones.
“For emergencies, DG sets have been installed at strategic locations. Camps and pilgrim shelters are being grounded with conduit pipes to prevent short-circuits, while detailed safety instructions are being disseminated,” Goyel informed.

The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to install solar-powered streetlights for the first time to reduce energy consumption. Apart from this, the off-grid areas are also provided with hydrogenised high-mast lights. These steps from the corporation are ensuring that the Mahakumbh 2025 will not only be a religious event, but it will also be an environmentally conscious event.
