Due to the formation of a system in the Bay of Bengal, the weather suddenly changed and heavy rains occurred in most parts of the district. As a result, a woman died and the farmers' crops lying in the fields and barns were submerged in water, creating a strong possibility of damage to the paddy and millet crops.
Clouds had covered the sky since 4 am on Tuesday, with heavy rain lashing the area from 7 am to 11 am. This unseasonal downpour is expected to cause the harvested crops to rot. In villages such as Sihora, Nagla Teja, Tarapur, Karab, Pachawar, Nagla Rana, Nagla Patiya, Rawal, Nagla Pola, Kishanpur, Khanpur, and Bandi, the harvesting of paddy and millet has already begun, and the crops are currently lying exposed in the fields and barns.
Fields Flooded, Harvested Crops Submerged
The excessive rain has flooded the fields, submerging the harvested crops. The waterlogging will cause the grain heads to rot, resulting in significant losses for the farmers. This comes at a time when farmers are already struggling with the financial blow from low potato prices, which have made their potato harvest an unprofitable venture.
Woman Dies After Being Struck by Lightning
On the another side in Nagla Jagrupa village, a woman was killed on Tuesday morning after lightning struck her house. Meera Devi, wife of Sureshchandra, went to the roof to cover the stove. It was then that a powerful lightning bolt struck her house with a tremendous crash. The intensity of the strike was so severe that Meera Devi died on the spot.
Appliances Burned Out
The lightning strike scattered bricks from the house's parapet and staircase cover. Inside the home, electrical appliances, including the inverter, were burnt out. Family members were horrified when they went to the roof and found Meera Devi with severe burns. They rushed her to a nearby hospital, but doctors pronounced her dead.
Naib Tehsildar Assures Assistance
The family then took the woman's body to the police station to report her death. Upon receiving the information, Naib Tehsildar Rakesh Kumar Sharma arrived, completed the inquest report ('Panchnama'), and sent the body for a post-mortem. The Naib Tehsildar has assured the grieving family of financial assistance and later visited the village to inspect the damage caused by the lightning.
Villagers Terrified, Dozens Of Homes Affected
The lightning strike, which occurred around 8 am, sent a wave of fear through the village of Nagla Jagrupa. Besides Sureshchandra's house, dozens of other homes in the vicinity had their electrical appliances and inverters fried. An eyewitness, Govardhan Varshney, said he was in his shop when he heard a sound so loud "it was like a bomb had exploded." He fell from his chair in shock, and people outside scrambled into his shop for safety.
