Following the massive success of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the subsequent three seasons of the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association's UP T-20 League, the focus has shifted to grassroots development. To unearth talent from urban neighbourhoods to rural villages, a series of district-level tournaments has been initiated across Uttar Pradesh.
Kanpur: A district-level league has already commenced.
Lucknow: The Lucknow Cricket Association is organising the Lucknow Premier League for 2026.
Meerut: Discussions have begun regarding the launch of a Meerut Premier League (MPL), potentially starting in 2026 under the Meerut District Cricket Association (MDCA).
Meerut: A Hub For Talent And Infrastructure
Meerut holds a distinct position in the state's cricketing ecosystem, contributing the highest number of players to UPCA and BCCI teams.
1. Player Contribution
Domestic Circuit: Between 2 and 5 players from Meerut feature in Uttar Pradesh teams across all age groups in BCCI domestic series.
UP T-20 Success: Across the three seasons of the UP T-20 league, 20 to 25 players from Meerut have participated across all six teams.
2. World-Class Manufacturing
Beyond players, Meerut is a global hub for cricket equipment manufacturing. Major world-class companies based in the city include:
- SG (SanspareilsGreenlands)
- SS (Sunridges)
- SF (Stanford)
- BDM
3. Stadiums And Facilities
The city boasts robust infrastructure capable of hosting various levels of cricket:
- Ranji Trophy Venues: Bhamashah Park and Gandhi Bagh.
- Night Match Venues: IIMT Cricket Academy and Game City Arena.
Roadmap For Meerut Premier League
Previous Trials And Proof Of Concept
Trial versions of league-based cricket have previously been held in Meerut at Bhamashah Park with the support of the district administration and through collective collaboration. These included:
- The Meerut Premium League.
- A tournament held during the Meerut Mahotsav.
Proposed Structure For The New League
Unlike previous collaborative efforts, the upcoming Meerut Premier League will be officially organised by the District Cricket Association.
Teams: The league will feature 6 to 8 teams.
Schedule: Organisers are considering scheduling the league after the conclusion of the BCCI domestic season to ensure players of all levels are available.
Objectives
Despite the high output of talent from Meerut, many skilled players remain overlooked. The primary goal of the MPL is to provide a platform for these players to showcase their skills. Strong performances in this league will serve as a pathway for selection into district, state, and other T-20 teams.
