A railway supervisor, identified as Sumit, a resident of Kitholi village, died by suicide on Monday morning by hanging himself from a mango tree on the outskirts of Dadri village. The act was reportedly carried out during a live video call to a woman who had previously accused him of rape.
The Incident
According to police reports, Sumit, who worked as a supervisor for a contractor at the New Sakauti railway station (Freight Corridor)—left his home for duty on Monday morning as usual. Shortly after 7:00 am, he reached an orchard in Dadri, where he initiated a video call with the survivor.
During the call, Sumit pressured the woman to reach a settlement in the ongoing rape case against him. When she refused, citing that the matter was already under trial in court, Sumit placed a noose around his neck and hung himself while still on the call. The woman reportedly took screenshots of the incident as it unfolded.
Background And Legal History
The relationship between the deceased and the survivor dates back to 2021, when the woman was working at Subharti Medical College.
Initial Allegation: Sumit was accused of deceiving the woman and raping her at a hotel in Kanker khera. A case was registered, and Sumit was subsequently jailed.
Persistent Harassment: After being released on bail, Sumit allegedly began a campaign of intimidation to force a settlement. This included sending a picture of a noose to the survivor via WhatsApp and making repeated suicidal threats.
Additional Charges: Due to his conduct, the survivor had filed two additional cases of intimidation against him at the Partapur and TP Nagar police stations.
Evidence And Police Investigation
A diary found at the scene contained a suicide note. In it, Sumit expressed his feelings for the woman but blamed her for his death, requesting that his family not be harassed. His motorcycle was also recovered near the body.
Official Statements
CO Prakash Chandra Agarwal confirmed the history of the rape case and the subsequent pressure Sumit placed on the victim to withdraw the charges.
SP City Ayush Vikram Singh stated that, based on the investigation so far, no fault has been found on the part of the woman. The police have conducted a post-mortem, handed the body over to the family, and are continuing a thorough investigation into the circumstances.
