Meerut: After a recent public meeting and detailed review session, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has given his nod to the long-awaited ring road project in Meerut, bringing a major relief to the city's residents and commuters. The incomplete inner ring road, pending for over 15 years, will now finally be completed, improving traffic flow and easing congestion within the city.
The project, which had been delayed for years due to land and budget issues, is now back on track. Two key missing links of the ring road will be constructed, effectively forming a complete inner circle around the city. This development will allow heavy vehicles and inter-city traffic to bypass congested city roads, offering a smoother alternative.
North Ring Road To Finally Move Forward
The first major section, named the North Ring Road, will stretch from Hapur Road to the Delhi-Dehradun bypass, passing through the Jhurranpur railway line and Delhi Road. Although the foundation stone for this road was laid in 2011 and a railway overbridge was built, no further progress was made due to the lack of land acquisition.

Now, the Meerut Development Authority (MEDA) has been tasked with purchasing 15 hectares of land for the project. A total of Rs 162 crore will be spent on this land, with Rs 100 crore allocated by MEDA and Rs 62 crore expected from the state government. Construction will be handled by the Public Works Department (PWD), which will also build two flyovers and drainage systems. The total construction cost is estimated to be around Rs 300 crore.
Once completed, this section will offer an alternative route to vehicles coming from Baghpat Road, enabling them to reach Hapur Road directly, without getting stuck in bottlenecks like the Bijli Bamba bypass.
New Stretch on Abunala Track To Save Time
The second section of the ring road will connect Garh Road to Roorkee Road near Jatauli via the Abunala drain track. Unlike the northern part, this stretch does not require land acquisition, significantly reducing costs. An estimated Rs 96 crore will be spent on its construction.
This part will divert traffic coming from Haridwar and Muzaffarnagar, enabling vehicles to reach Mawana Road, Kila Road and Garh Road without entering the city centre. Commuters on Garh and Hapur Roads will also benefit from smoother access to other parts of Meerut.
These two new sections, once completed, will integrate with the already constructed portions near Lohianagar and Jagriti Vihar, finally completing the inner ring road project. Additionally, existing bypass roads like the one from Modipuram to Partapur will also be linked.
Rs 500 Crore Commitment From The CM
Although the Chief Minister had already spoken about the ring road in public, it was again strongly pushed during the review meeting by Minister of State for Energy Somendra Tomar and Cantt MLA Amit Agarwal. Responding to their demand, CM Yogi confirmed the project would be implemented with a budget of Rs 500 crore.
Updates On Ganga Expressway, Touris And Airport
During the meeting, the CM also confirmed that work on the Ganga Expressway will begin this year, promising six-hour travel to Prayagraj. He mentioned ongoing surveys to explore its extension from Meerut to Haridwar.

In a tourism boost, Yogi announced that Bhola ki Jhaal, a popular local site known for its fast-flowing water, will be developed as a tourist attraction.
Regarding air connectivity, the CM said that the obstacle related to airport land registration has been resolved and that a letter has been sent to the Airport Authority of India (AAI). Dr. Laxmikant Bajpai later stated that 72-seater aircraft will soon be able to operate from Meerut.
Demand for High Court Bench Raised Again
The meeting also saw renewed calls for a High Court bench in Meerut for Western Uttar Pradesh. Leaders including MP Rajkumar Sangwan, Rajya Sabha member Laxmikant Bajpai, and MLA Amit Agarwal raised the issue, citing long travel times to Prayagraj. The CM responded that this decision rests with the Supreme Court and the Central Government, and does not require state recommendation.
