The district administration, Meerut, has completed the acquisition of land for widening Delhi Road, which has narrowed due to the construction of the Rapid Rail corridor between Jagdish Mandap and the Transport Nagar turn. A total of 70 shops and other buildings are affected along a 700-metre stretch.

The administration has sought Rs 60 crore from the NCRTC to compensate landowners, with proceedings to take possession of the land set to begin once payments are made. Six shops will be fully demolished as part of the acquisition, while affected families will be provided financial assistance under the rehabilitation policy, for which the Divisional Commissioner has already approved.

The Rapid Rail corridor enters Meerut city underground near Jagdish Mandap, passes through three underground stations, and emerges above ground near the MES on Roorkee Road. Its construction has significantly narrowed the busy Delhi Road. To address this, the administration plans to widen the road by three metres on each side and relocate an existing drain.

District Magistrate Dr VK Singh said road widening in this area is essential to reduce traffic congestion. He confirmed that land acquisition has been completed and compensation to landowners will be disbursed within a week, after which possession will be taken.
