The Uttar Pradesh government will observe International Girl Child Week from October 3 to 11 under Mission Shakti 5.0, with a series of programmes aimed at promoting the rights, education, health, and empowerment of girls. The initiative coincides with the International Day of the Girl Child on October 11.

According to officials, the week-long observance will focus on the safety, dignity, and self-reliance of girls. It follows an outreach campaign conducted from September 22 to October 1, in which the Women and Child Development Department reached over 13 lakh people through empowerment initiatives.

The week will open on October 3 with the ‘Driving My Dreams’ programme, under which at least 100 girls and women in each district will receive driving training. Subsequent events include Personal Safety Awareness sessions on October 4, a Self-Defence Workshop on October 6, and the DM for a Day initiative on October 7 to develop leadership skills among selected girls.

On October 8, Kanya Janmotsav will be held at the block level, honouring newborn girls and their mothers at government hospitals alongside tree plantation drives. On October 9, girls rescued from child marriage will be honoured under the ‘No to Child Marriage’ campaign. A Personal Hygiene Dialogue on October 10 will spread awareness about menstrual hygiene.

The observance will conclude on October 11 with ‘Shakti Samvad’, where beneficiaries of schemes like the Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana and Mukhyamantri Bal Seva Yojana will interact with district officials.

Additional Chief Secretary of Women and Child Development, Leena Johari, said programmes like Kanya Pujan, Nukkad Natak, and cyclothons under Mission Shakti 5.0 have promoted respect for daughters. “International Girl Child Week is a powerful platform to connect daughters with their rights and opportunities. Our goal is to make every daughter self-reliant and empowered,” she added.
