A recruitment drive for youths affected by the land acquisition for the Noida International Airport turned chaotic on Tuesday. Candidates protested vehemently after being offered employment through a third-party placement company instead of direct hiring by the airport operator.

The Incident

Youths from families displaced by the airport project were called to the airport premises for interviews on Tuesday. However, the situation escalated when they were informed that their recruitment would be routed through a placement agency. Agitated by this, the candidates caused a commotion inside the premises and later protested outside the airport gate.

According to the youths, only half of the candidates who had opted for jobs were allowed entry. Inside, Sub-Divisional Magistrates Abhay Kumar Singh and Durgesh Singh, along with NIAL representative Ashutosh Tripathi, reiterated the offer of employment via a placement firm.

Company officials eventually pacified the group and sent them away, assuring them that they would be called back for interviews later.

Background: A Six-Year Wait

The protest stems from a long-standing agreement regarding the first phase of land acquisition.

The Agreement: Families affected by the acquisition were given a choice between a one-time cash settlement of Rs 5.5 lakh or an employment opportunity.

The Beneficiaries: 335 farmer families from villages including Dayanatpur Kheda, Nangla Chhitar, Nangla Ganeshi, Nangla Phool Khan, Rohi, and Nangla Sharif Khan opted for the job.

The Delay: These youths have reportedly been unemployed for the last six to seven years, waiting for permanent positions. With the first phase of construction nearly complete, they have been actively demanding jobs for the past three to four months.

This was not the first failed attempt at recruitment. On September 11, the candidates were called with their educational documents but were met with the same third-party hiring proposal, which they rejected.

MLA Intervenes

Following the failed talks on Tuesday, the disappointed youths intercepted Jewar MLA Dhirendra Singh on the Yamuna Expressway while he was returning from Mathura. They briefed him on the situation and expressed their frustration.

The MLA termed the youths' demand for direct employment as "legitimate." He pacified the group and assured them that he would negotiate with the airport operating company to secure their employment directly.
