In a significant move to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality, the Noida Authority has received Rs 27 crore under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). The funds will be utilised to identify and fix bottlenecks on major roads that are frequently affected by traffic jams, a key contributor to vehicular pollution in the city.
A detailed traffic congestion survey is currently being conducted by a consultant firm, which will pinpoint the exact problem areas across Noida. Based on the survey’s findings, the Noida Traffic Cell (NTC) will implement technical corrections to streamline traffic flow and reduce emissions.
SP Singh, General Manager of the Noida Traffic Cell, said the aim is to ensure jam-free travel and curb rising pollution levels caused by idling vehicles. “We are focusing on major roads where recurring congestion is observed—primarily due to bottlenecks, poorly placed U-turns, or lack of free left turns,” he added.
The plan includes:
-Redesigning traffic choke points
-Reconfiguring junctions to allow smoother left turns
-Removing unnecessary U-turns
-Hiring technically capable agencies for reconstruction
-Making traffic signals more efficient
Singh added that apart from improving commute time, the initiative is critical for reducing vehicle-induced air pollution, aligning with NCAP’s long-term goals.
Under NCAP, the Centre is expected to allocate a total of Rs 300 crore to Noida for air quality improvement projects. Earlier, the Noida Authority had received two separate instalments of Rs 30 crore each, which were used for pollution control measures.
The current Rs 27 crore fund will specifically target traffic decongestion efforts, and once the survey is completed, a comprehensive traffic improvement plan will be rolled out.
