The electricity department is in the process of replacing old meters with smart meters across UP’s Raebareli district. Polaris Smart Meter has been appointed as the implementing agency for this task.
As per government instructions, along with the installation of smart meters, the old cables are also supposed to be replaced with armed cables. However, due to negligence on the part of the responsible officials, the agency has been installing smart meters on the old cables.
Consumers have raised concerns, claiming that despite repeated requests, the agency’s employees are not replacing the cables. While the department is progressing rapidly with the meter replacements, the government’s objective of curbing electricity theft and addressing ongoing issues with incorrect billing seems to be undermined.

Meter replacement work is underway in several villages, including Girdharpur, Sindura Mau, Kurauli Dam, and Jyotiya Mau. However, due to the actions of the implementing agency, the government's plan appears to be falling short.
Residents such as Deshraj from Girdharpur, Gurudev from Jyoti Mau, and Om Sagar from Kurauli Dam have complained that when they requested the installation of new cables along with the meter replacement, the employees flatly refused, even though new cables have been installed in some households in the area.

Consumers have expressed frustration, claiming that the employees are acting arbitrarily, with some even getting into arguments over the issue. Despite these complaints, the employees have not responded positively.
Ankit, the supervisor of the organisation, stated that no such complaints have been reported. Executive Engineer Mannu Singh assured that if the new cables are not being installed as required, action will be taken following an investigation.
