Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the world’s largest meditation centre Swarved Mahamandir in Varanasi during his two-day visit to Uttar Pradesh’s holy city. After the inauguration ceremony, PM Modi along with UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took a tour of the meditation centre and said the Swarved Mahamandir stands as a symbol of India’s social and spiritual strength.

Swarved Mahamandir is no less than an architectural marvel that showcases the rich cultural heritage of India with the purpose of igniting minds through Vihangam Yoga (a school of yoga and meditation). The meditation centre authorities stated that the monument is an amalgamation of ancient philosophy, spirituality and modern architecture and claimed that it will be a historic site for many generations to come.

Here is everything you need to know about the largest meditation centre in the world:

  • Situated in the Umaraha area, approximately 12 km from the holy city of Varanasi, the  Swarved Mahamandir spans for more than three lakh square feet and accounts for 20,000 meditation practitioners.

  • The foundation stone of the meditation centre was laid by Sadguru Acharya Swantantra Dev and Sant Pravar Vigyan Dev in 2004.

  • The construction of the world’s largest meditation centre involved the collaborative efforts of 600 workers and 15 engineers.

  • Pink sandstone decorates the walls and a beautiful garden with medicinal herbs adds to the grandeur of the mahamandir.

  • Verses of the swarved are carved upon the walls of the seven-floor super-structure to make it a spiritually energised location for people of all backgrounds.

  • The colossal structure will function as the most spiritually significant abode of Vihangam Yoga, a non-profit organisation that claims to teach an ancient Indian meditation technique.

  • The Swarved Mahamandir is the physical representation of the spiritual treatise Swarved, authored by Sadguru Sadafaldeo Maharaj, who is the founder and spiritual leader of Vihangam Yoga.
