Sudden, heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds over two days has devastated Kharif crops, particularly paddy, across the region, dashing farmers' hopes for a bumper harvest. The unseasonal downpour during the monsoon's withdrawal has left fields waterlogged and caused extensive damage, prompting calls for immediate government intervention.

Widespread Crop Damage

The relentless rain on Monday and Tuesday has severely impacted the standing crops in the Dadri, Jewar, Dankaur, Rabupura, and Jahangirpur areas. Harvested paddy left to dry in the fields suffered the most significant damage due to waterlogging.

Across the district's Jewar, Dadri, and Sadar tehsils, 59,000 farmers had cultivated paddy on 35,000 hectares of land. Following a favorable monsoon season, a bumper yield of 100,000 to 150,000 quintals was anticipated. However, the recent weather has shattered these expectations. Current estimates project:

  • 30 per cent to 50 per cent damage to ripened paddy crops.
  • Up to 40 per cent damage to unripe crops.
  • Over 50 per cent damage to harvested crops submerged in water.
  • Administration's Response And Insurance Claims

In response, the district administration has urged farmers to report their losses within 72 hours to facilitate timely insurance claims. Deputy Director of Agriculture, Rajeev Kumar, highlighted that under the Pradhan Mantri FasalBima Yojana, crops damaged by natural disasters like hailstorms or rain for up to 14 days after harvesting are eligible for compensation, provided the incident is reported within the 72-hour window.

Farmers can report the damage through the following channels:

Government of India Toll-Free Number: 14447

Crop Insurance App

District Manager Crop Insurance Toll-Free Numbers: 18002091111 and 18008896868

For localised reporting, farmers can contact tehsil representatives directly:

Dadri Tehsil: Devraj Singh at 7906769211

Sadar Tehsil: Dheeraj Kumar at 7579561257

Jewar Tehsil: Ramovatar at 7754924114

Officials have been instructed to conduct a block-wise assessment of the damage immediately to ensure insured farmers receive their benefits promptly.

Voices From The Ground

The despair among the farming community and related stakeholders is evident.

"We had hopes for a good crop and yield, but the sudden rain has shattered them. This year's Diwali will be bleak. The government should conduct a survey as soon as possible and compensate farmers for their losses," said farmer Jugendra Singh.

"With government procurement centres not being operational, farmers were already being exploited in private markets. The rain has further increased the farmers' difficulties," stated Rajkumar.

"Due to continuous good rain this season, there was less consumption of diesel for the paddy crop, and we were expecting a bumper yield. But the rain on the ripened crop has ruined everything. More than 50 per cent of the crop is likely to be damaged," lamented Hari Singh.

Tenant farmer Om Pal shared his plight, "I had prepared the crop after taking a field from a landlord on an advance payment for one year, but every year I have to face heavy losses due to natural disasters. My financial condition is deteriorating due to not receiving timely relief."

The impact has extended to the markets as well. Umesh Rana, a commission agent at Dadri Naveen Mandi, noted, "Due to the rain for the last three days, the market has become waterlogged. In the last three days, the arrival of paddy at the market has decreased by 30 to 40 per cent."

Echoing the demand for aid, Krishna Nagar, National General Secretary of the Kisan Majdoor Sangharsh Morcha, said, "The rain over the past three days has broken the farmers' backs. First floods and now rain have created a livelihood crisis for the food providers. The district administration should conduct a survey of the crops and provide appropriate compensation."
