To curb the rising number of road accidents caused by stray cattle on highways, the Uttar Pradesh Animal Husbandry Department will launch a month-long campaign starting April 20. As part of the initiative, radium strips will be tied around the necks of cows and other animals to make them visible to drivers at night, helping prevent collisions.
This drive follows the pilot launch of the scheme by Animal Husbandry Minister Dharmpal Singh in Gosainganj a few weeks ago. Now, from April 20 to May 20, veterinary officers and farmers across all districts will collaborate to implement this campaign, especially in rural areas near state, district, and national highways.
Each district has been allotted a budget of Rs 1 lakh for purchasing radium strips. In the initial phase, results from the campaign will be monitored to assess its effectiveness in reducing accidents. Based on the outcomes, the scheme will be expanded to more areas along highways.
Principal Secretary of the Animal Husbandry Department, K. Ravindra Nayak, stated that a detailed report will be compiled post-campaign to determine its impact. If proven effective, the scheme will be formalised and scaled up in the next phase.
