The Uttar Pradesh government is set to prioritise the protection and promotion of indigenous cow breeds under its ongoing breed improvement program. Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister Dharampal Singh has directed officials to encourage animal keepers to rear native breeds such as Gir, Sahiwal, Tharparkar, Gangatiri, and Haryanvi cows in order to boost milk quality and productivity.
Chairing a departmental meeting at Vidhan Bhavan on Wednesday, the minister emphasised the use of sexed sorted semen in artificial insemination schemes and called for specialised training for field workers to ensure effective implementation.
In light of the upcoming monsoon season, he instructed that green fodder be sown on pasture lands by July 15, and that preparations be made for timely vaccination drives to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
To improve infrastructure in gaushalas (cow shelters), the minister directed that cow dung processing machines be made available in every shelter and that adequate arrangements for fodder, straw, water, electricity, and medicines be ensured.
Singh also stressed the need to organise training programs and farmer seminars aimed at increasing milk production and enhancing the marketing of Parag dairy products.
The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary of Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Department Amit Kumar Ghosh, Special Secretaries Devendra Pandey and Ram Sahay Yadav, PCDF Managing Director Vaibhav Shrivastava, Milk Commissioner Rakesh Kumar Mishra, Director of Animal Husbandry Administration and Development Yogendra Pawar, and Director of Disease Control and Field Services Rajiv Saxena, among others.
