In a forward-looking move to enhance the effectiveness of legislative work, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Secretariat is set to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) training for its Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs). The training will be conducted by professors from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and is likely to be held during the upcoming monsoon session or shortly thereafter.
Participation in the training will be voluntary, to equip MLAs with a basic understanding of AI tools and their practical applications in governance and lawmaking. The initiative is designed to help legislators utilise technology to streamline their duties and decision-making processes.

During the session, MLAs will be introduced to various ways AI can assist in legislative functions, including drafting bills, identifying legal loopholes, comparing legislation across states and countries, and analysing public opinion through online platforms, surveys, and petitions. AI tools will also enable predictive analysis of the socio-economic impact of proposed laws.
The training will cover AI’s ability to organise and retrieve old legislative documents, debates, and reports, allowing faster and more efficient referencing. MLAs will also be shown how AI can translate speeches and documents into multiple Indian languages and monitor government project progress and expenditures in real-time through AI-powered dashboards.
Emphasis will be placed on the ethical use of AI, ensuring that it is implemented in a secure, fair, and transparent manner, with strict protection of citizens' data.
As part of the broader vision, the Assembly Secretariat is also exploring the formation of dedicated AI support units. These would assist legislators in legal research, document verification, and policy analysis. In addition, regular AI-related workshops for MLAs and their staff are being planned.
Experts believe that this initiative could mark a significant step toward a digital legislative transformation, positioning Uttar Pradesh as a pioneer in integrating advanced technology into democratic governance.
