Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday accused the Congress of dividing the country for political power and neglecting the plight of those displaced during the Partition. Speaking at the exhibition organised in GPO Park to mark Partition Horror Memorial Day, he alleged that the then government adopted an indifferent attitude towards Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain and Christian refugees who left their homes during the 1947 Partition.
“The Congress government neither built memorials nor set up museums for these displaced people. Their suffering was forgotten,” he said, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, through the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), gave refugees the right to citizenship and rehabilitation for the first time, including those in Jammu and Kashmir.
CM Yogi said the Uttar Pradesh government will provide land leases and proper rehabilitation to eligible families under the CAA. Calling the Partition “a black chapter of the appeasement policy of the Congress,” he said the tragedy broke the unity of Sanatan Bharat and inflicted deep pain on the nation.
He credited Prime Minister Modi for declaring August 14 as Partition Horror Memorial Day in 2021, saying it brought history alive. “Revolutionaries embraced the gallows for independence, but Congress divided the country in its greed for power. The violence that emptied cities like Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi and Multan of Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists was the result of this policy,” he added.
According to the CM, 15–20 lakh people lost their lives and crores were displaced during the violence, which he termed the culmination of atrocities promoted by Congress. He said exhibitions like these are vital to connect the youth with history.
Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, Cabinet Minister Swatantra Dev Singh, and BJP State President Bhupendra Chaudhary were also present at the event.
