Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of seven key healthcare infrastructure projects worth Rs 941 crore at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow. Marking 120 years of KGMU’s historic contribution to medical education and public health, the Chief Minister hailed the university as a symbol of India’s medical legacy and a beacon of national service.

Among the major projects, CM Yogi dedicated a new 92-bed Cardiology Wing and the state’s first Orthopaedic Super Speciality Centre. With this addition, the total number of cardiology beds at the university has increased to 176, addressing the issue of long waiting periods for critical heart treatments.

Built for Rs 105 crore, the advanced cardiology facility includes state-of-the-art Cath Labs, 3D echocardiography systems, and dedicated ICUs equipped with 96 bedside monitors and other high-end diagnostic machines.

The Orthopaedic Super Speciality Centre, constructed for Rs 86 crore, houses 340 beds and eight fully equipped operation theatres. It will provide comprehensive bone-related treatments ranging from pediatric orthopaedics to sports medicine and joint replacement surgeries. The centre also includes a bone bank—the first in the state—and will operate round-the-clock pharmacy counters.

The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone of the Trauma-2 Centre, a Rs 273 crore project to be completed in two years. The seven-storey facility will feature 500 beds, nine operating theatres, and an expanded parking space for over 250 vehicles. A patient utility complex with a waiting area, kitchen, café, and dining space will also be developed for the comfort of patients’ families. Once completed, Trauma-2 will be a Category-1 level trauma facility in the state.

Additional projects launched include:

-A new General Surgery building (Rs 378 crore) equipped with 12 OTs, robotic surgery, ICUs, solar power, and modern infrastructure

-A state-of-the-art diagnostic lab, a new administrative building, a patient accommodation block, and a guest house, to be constructed at a combined cost of Rs 99.10 crore

KGMU's Balrampur Satellite Centre was also highlighted during the event. CM Yogi emphasised the importance of expanding medical services to smaller towns to ease the pressure on tertiary hospitals like KGMU, SGPGI, and PGI.

He also discussed the initiative of a Centre of Excellence in Medical Technology in collaboration with IIT Kanpur, urging KGMU and SGPGI to play a leading role in research and innovation to make India self-reliant in healthcare technology.
