In a shocking incident in the Govindpuri Main Market, a jeweller was murdered during a failed robbery attempt orchestrated by an MBA graduate heavily in debt. The accused, identified as Ankit Gupta, was apprehended by the victim’s son and subsequently thrashed by the public before being handed over to the police.
The Incident
On Thursday morning, the victim, Girdharilal Soni, was at his jewellery shop when the accused, Ankit Gupta, entered. Gupta allegedly threw chilli powder at the victim and attacked him repeatedly with a sharp weapon before Girdharilal could react. The accused had presumed Girdharilal was alone and planned to kill him to loot cash and jewellery.
However, the victim's son, Rupendra, was at home upstairs. Hearing his father’s screams, Rupendra rushed down and resisted the attacker. During the struggle, the accused also struck Rupendra on the head with the weapon. Despite the attack, Rupendra managed to catch hold of Gupta.
Mob Justice And Arrest
Upon realising the situation, a crowd gathered at the spot and severely beat the accused. Gupta sustained serious injuries, including fractures in three fingers on both hands, his elbow, and wrist, as well as significant head trauma. His face and hands were reported to be swollen, and he suffered seizures due to the head injury.
Police intervened and admitted Gupta to MMG Hospital for treatment. ACP Modinagar, Amit Saxena, confirmed that the accused, son of Rakesh Gupta, was presented in court on Friday afternoon and has been sent to jail. Police investigations are ongoing.
Motive And Background
Investigations revealed that Ankit Gupta holds an MBA degree and had previously worked for several corporate companies. He had become deeply entangled in online trading, accumulating a debt of approximately Rs 50 lakh.
To manage his finances, Gupta had previously sold his house in Sucheta Puri Colony and moved abroad. Later, he registered his motorbike with an online booking company and sold insurance policies, but his debts continued to mount. The situation worsened around Diwali when a business partner allegedly cheated him of Rs 300,000.

Aftermath
While the Govindpuri market opened as usual on Friday, the atmosphere remained tense. The murder was the primary topic of discussion among traders, and a large crowd gathered at the deceased’s home to offer condolences. Local residents have expressed outrage over the heinous crime, demanding the death penalty for the accused.
