Electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh are set to face a 4.27 per cent increase in their June power bills as power distribution companies implement a fuel surcharge adjustment. This move is expected to generate an additional revenue of Rs 390 crore for the companies.
The surcharge has been levied under the provisions of the Multi Year Tariff Regulation–2025 of the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC), which authorises power companies to revise the Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge (FPPPA) on a monthly basis based on actual expenditures. The June surcharge is based on power purchase costs incurred in March.
Earlier, consumers experienced a 1.24 per cent rise in April due to additional fuel costs incurred in January, followed by a 2 per cent reduction in May based on February's expenditure.
Meanwhile, the tariff determination process for the current financial year is underway, with proposals indicating a potential tariff hike of up to 30 per cent in the coming two to three months.
The Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Consumer Council has strongly opposed the surcharge. Council President Awadhesh Verma stated that imposing an additional burden on consumers is unjustified, particularly when power companies are already holding a surplus of Rs 33,122 crore collected from consumers. He termed the surcharge "illegal" and urged that the Rs 390 crore be adjusted from the existing surplus rather than being passed on to the public.
Verma further added that the Council would raise the matter before the Commission, demanding a rollback of the surcharge and a reduction in electricity tariffs instead.
