On the occasion of Diwali, the firecracker market in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, experienced a significant surge, with total sales crossing Rs 5 crore. Firecrackers were sold extensively from the city center to rural areas.
On Diwali day itself, sales continued late into the night, not just at the temporary firecracker market set up at the city’s Numaish Ground, but also at wholesale shops along Gwalior Road, Vicharpura, Luhanna, and even from small vendors selling from cots and makeshift stalls at busy intersections and crowded markets often in open violation of regulations.
According to a report by Jagran.com, the rush for firecrackers remained high until late at night. People were buying sky shots, colorful sparklers, rockets and crackers like anar, charkhi (spinners) etc.
Fireworks are traditionally used in large quantities during Diwali, the festival of lights. In recent years, however, stricter regulations had led to a decline in sales. This year, a GST exemption on firecrackers made them more affordable, contributing to a significant revival in the market.
About a month before Diwali, the local administration permitted firecracker sales away from densely populated areas. After Dhanteras, temporary markets were allowed to operate at eight major locations across the district for a period of four days.

Despite strict rules and conditions, violations were widespread. On Monday, firecracker sales were observed even in the crowded central markets of the city, where young vendors sold fireworks from temporary setups. On Diwali day alone, sales were estimated to be around Rs 1 crore.
