In a significant shift, admissions to General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) courses in government nursing colleges in Uttar Pradesh will now be conducted through an entrance test. Starting from the 2025-26 academic session, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University will organise the entrance exam, which will be open to students who have passed their intermediate exams.
Currently, there are 453 GNM seats available in nine government nursing colleges across the state. In contrast, private nursing colleges in the state offer approximately 19,000 seats.

The government-run institutions include prominent colleges such as KGMU College of Nursing Lucknow, School of Nursing Balrampur Hospital Lucknow, and School of Nursing SN Medical College Agra, among others.
The decision, confirmed by Parth Sarathi Sen Sharma, Principal Secretary of the Health and Medical Education Department, marks a shift from the previous admission process, which was based on merit from high school and intermediate examinations. The new system will be implemented under UPGET-2025.
