In a significant move to support students of government schools, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved Rs 280 crore for the purchase of school bags for students of classes 1 to 8. The funds will be transferred directly to the Aadhaar-linked bank accounts of parents through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.

This allocation is part of the budget for the financial year 2025–26 and will benefit students enrolled in council-run, government, aided, and social welfare department-managed schools. Currently, over 1.93 crore students are studying in council schools across the state.

Under the existing scheme, each student receives Rs 1,200 annually for uniforms, shoes, socks, stationery, and school bags. The recently released Rs 280 crore specifically covers the cost of school bags.

Earlier, on April 30, 2025, the Department of Basic Education had requested Rs 350 crore for this purpose. Out of this, Rs 280 crore has now been sanctioned by the Governor under prescribed conditions and guidelines.

The government order, issued on Thursday, directs the Director of Basic Education to ensure that the allocated amount is strictly utilised for the procurement of school bags only.
