The Uttar Pradesh Higher Education Department has announced that students of general undergraduate courses such as BA, BSc, and BCom will now be eligible for apprenticeships, receiving a stipend of Rs 9,000 per month. The department has allocated a budget of Rs 100 crore for this initiative.
Previously, the apprenticeship facility was limited to students of engineering, polytechnic, and ITI courses. Under the expanded scheme, students will receive Rs 4,500 from the Centre, Rs 3,500 from the industry they work with, and Rs 1,000 from the state government.
To facilitate these apprenticeships, universities and colleges will sign agreements with local industries in their districts, enabling students to gain practical industry experience alongside their academic studies. This move is expected to make it easier for students in professional courses to secure apprenticeships.
Prof JP Pandey, Vice-Chancellor of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, also announced the launch of an ‘Earn by Learn’ facility for MTech students from the current academic session, allowing them to earn while continuing their education.
The Higher Education Department will soon roll out an awareness campaign to guide students on registration and participation.
