The Uttar Pradesh government has initiated the Annapurna Bhawan Yojana to enhance the public distribution system and ensure smooth provision of food grains to ration card holders. About 75 to 100 Annapurna Bhawans will be constructed annually in each district.
To expedite the construction, the cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, decided on Tuesday to utilise government funds for the project. These buildings will also generate income for the Gram Samaj by facilitating the sale of goods besides ration items.

Parliamentary Affairs and Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna, while briefing the media after the cabinet meeting, stated that funding for the Annapurna Bhawans can now be sourced from MNREGA, State Finance Commission, MP/MLA funds, Purvanchal and Bundelkhand Development Funds, or other state/central government schemes.
The Food and Civil Supplies Department will arrange funds from its savings for the regions that are deprived of these sources. Provisions for the maintenance of these buildings have also been made.
The minister informed that each building will be constructed on 484 sq ft. A budget of Rs 200 crore has been allocated for 2025-26. Each Annapurna Bhawan is being constructed at a cost of Rs 8.50 lakh. He also mentioned that such Annapurna Bhawans will be built in cities as well.
