In a bid to improve the cleanliness ranking of its urban areas, the Uttar Pradesh government is set to model its cities’ sanitation systems on the lines of Indore, the country’s cleanest city. The state is preparing a new action plan with an estimated expenditure of Rs 54.51 crore to bring systematic and visible improvement in urban sanitation.
Currently, night cleaning is carried out in selected market areas across cities. However, the government now plans to expand the scope of night cleaning to additional locations after assessing feasibility. The move aims to ensure cleaner streets and better hygiene during the early hours.
Following Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s directives to give special attention to urban cleanliness, the Urban Development Department has begun work on a structured action plan. Under the proposed model, deployment of sanitation workers will be made according to set standards, taking into account the population size of each ward to determine the required workforce.
The action plan also focuses on streamlining garbage collection systems. Alongside the existing door-to-door garbage collection, measures may be introduced to strictly prohibit open dumping, particularly outside commercial establishments. The state is also considering the installation of additional dustbins wherever necessary.
Additionally, a special campaign will be launched to clean and revive old garbage dumping sites, which will then be developed into green spaces as part of the state’s cleanliness and beautification drive.
Officials believe the upgraded system will not only enhance the day-to-day sanitation in cities but also improve Uttar Pradesh’s performance in national cleanliness rankings.
