The Balrampur Police in Uttar Pradesh arrested two individuals after an encounter on early Wednesday morning in connection with the gangrape of a 22-year-old deaf and mute woman in Bahadurpur, Dehat Kotwali area of the district.

The gruesome incident took place on the night of August 11. It came to light after CCTV footage of the victim being chased on a deserted road surfaced on social media and went viral.

The accused have been identified as Ankur Verma (21) and Harshit Pandey (22). They tried to evade the arrest and were injured in their attempt during the encounter.

According to the police, an investigation is underway in the case and the possibility of the involvement of more accused is being probed.

What happened on August 11 night?

As per the police, at around 8 pm on August 11, the victim was returning home from her maternal grandparents' house when a young man ran into her and took her to a secluded place.

The victim, deaf and mute, was defenceless and traumatised by the incident. He family, on the other hand, was alarmed when she didn't return till 9 pm.

Upon searching, they found her in an unconscious state in the field. She was taken to the district women's hospital. after the doctor stabilised her, she gave some details about the incident through gestures.

Police action so far

The experts have been called to help in the investigation. Balrampur SP Vikash Kumar confirmed that an FIR was registered in the case On Tuesday night, the police identified the accused, after which an alert was issued and efforts to nab them were initiated.

At around 12:30 am on Wednesday, the suspects were found near the Dehat Kotwali area. The police said that they were trying to flee to Nepal.

The police confronted them, and they opened fire, to which the police promptly retaliated. In retaliatory fire, the accused were injured.
