A 60-year-old man allegedly died by suicide on Saturday after offering his Eid-ul-Azha prayers in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria. The deceased, identified as Ish Mohammad, reportedly slit his throat inside a hut near his home
According to the police, cited by Jagran.com, Ish Mohammad had attended the Eid congregation at a local mosque and later went to rest in a nearby hut. When family members went to call him for the festive meal, they found him lying unconscious in a pool of blood, with a deep wound on his throat.
Mohammad was rushed to BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur, where doctors declared him dead.
Police revealed that Mohammad frequently visited Kichaucha Sharif in Ambedkar Nagar district, a known Sufi shrine. They suspect that he might have been influenced by religious beliefs of sacrifice, which prompted him to take this step during the holy occasion.
Locals, cited by the Hindustan Times, claimed the deceased had left a note saying he was sacrificing himself in the name of Allah on the holy occasion of Eid.
"We found him bleeding profusely and immediately tried to save him. We are devastated and cannot understand why he would do this," Faiz Mohammad Ansari, one of the victim’s sons, said, as per the aforementioned media outlet.
Nanda Prasad, the in-charge of Gauri Bazar Police Station, confirmed the incident, stating, "Preliminary investigation suggests the elderly man slit his own throat. Further inquiries are ongoing to determine the exact cause behind this step."
