A newlywed woman has been arrested for the murder of her husband, just two months after their wedding, despite the couple having been in a relationship for nine years prior. Jitendra Kumar Yadav, 33, was found hanging in a rented house in the Izzatnagar area of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, under circumstances that initially suggested suicide. However, a post-mortem examination revealed the shocking truth that he had been strangled. Further investigation by the police uncovered a chilling plot involving the victim’s wife, Jyoti, and her family, who allegedly staged the whole incident.
At first, there were no suspicions surrounding the death, and neighbours were told that Jitendra had died by suicide. However, a post-mortem examination later revealed that "strangulation" was the actual cause of death. According to an NDTV report, following an in-depth investigation, the police revealed that Jitendra had been strangled by his wife, while her father, mother, and brother held him down.
To cover up the crime, the body was hung from a window grill using a muffler to make it appear as though he had taken his own life. Three of the accused have been arrested, but the police are still looking for the brother-in-law.
But why did she kill him?
Jyoti, the wife, and Jitendra had married on November 25 of the previous year, after a nine-year relationship that began during their student days. The police confirmed that the marriage had been conducted according to Hindu customs and with the consent of both families.
However, their relationship started to sour within weeks of their wedding, mainly due to financial issues. According to police reports, Jitendra had withdrawn Rs 20,000 from Jyoti’s bank account and lost it through online gambling. This loss led to numerous arguments between the couple.
On 26 January, Jyoti confronted her husband about the missing money, and the argument escalated into a physical fight. At that point, Jyoti allegedly called her parents and brother to their rented home.

The house was located in Girja Shankar Colony, within the Izzatnagar area. Jitendra had been living there with Jyoti since their marriage. He was originally from Bhaupora village in Etawah district.
The police stated that Jyoti's father, Kalicharan, mother Chameli, and brother Deepak arrived at the house following her call. During the confrontation, police claim that the family restrained Jitendra, while Jyoti strangled him.
Once Jitendra stopped responding, the family allegedly worked to erase any signs of murder. His body was tied with a muffler and hung from a window grill to make it appear as though he had died by suicide. An alarm was raised, and neighbours were informed that the son-in-law had hanged himself.
When the police arrived on 26 January, the death was initially suspected to be a suicide. Jitendra’s body was found hanging inside the rented accommodation, and there were no immediate signs to suggest otherwise.
However, following a complaint filed by Jitendra’s brother, Ajay Kumar, the police registered a case of abetment to suicide against Jyoti and three others and ordered a post-mortem examination.
The post-mortem revealed that the cause of death was strangulation, not hanging, ruling out the possibility of suicide. Consequently, the police changed the charges from abetment to suicide to murder and launched a more extensive investigation.

Jyoti's brother, Deepak, has also been named as an accused in the case. The police are continuing efforts to locate and arrest him.
During questioning, the police say Jyoti confessed to the crime and provided details of the events leading up to her husband’s death. She told investigators that she and Jitendra had known each other since their student days. Jitendra was employed as a contract worker at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), a premier government research institution based in Bareilly. Jyoti, police said, was working as a contract bus conductor with the Uttar Pradesh Road Transport Corporation.
Due to frequent disputes over financial issues had deepened bitterness between the couple in the weeks following their wedding. On the day of the incident, she claimed, the argument spiralled out of control, prompting her to call her family.
Furthermore, Police allege that during the fight that followed, her parents and brother restrained Jitendra, allowing her to strangle him "in a fit of rage". After his death, the family allegedly worked together to stage the scene as a suicide by hanging.
