The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will organise district-level seminars and exhibitions across Uttar Pradesh on June 25 to mark the 50th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency in India. The initiative aims to inform the public, especially the younger generation, about what the party describes as a "dark chapter" in the country’s democratic history.
As part of the program, individuals who actively resisted the Emergency—referred to as "democracy fighters"—will be honoured at the district level. Additionally, tree plantation drives will be conducted as a symbolic gesture. The exhibitions will depict the events and consequences of the Emergency, and are intended to highlight what the BJP terms the "anti-democratic actions" of the Congress party during that period.
On Sunday, BJP state president Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary and state general secretary (organisation) Dharampal Singh conducted a virtual meeting to review preparations. They emphasised the importance of well-planned and impactful district-level programs.
Chaudhary stated that the Congress, which imposed the Emergency under then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975, had suppressed constitutional rights and democratic institutions. “We must make the new generation aware of this chapter and expose the unconstitutional face of the Congress,” he said.
Dharampal Singh added that during the Emergency, lakhs of innocent citizens were imprisoned, and basic freedoms were curtailed. “This black chapter in India’s history must not be forgotten,” he said. He directed party workers to identify and invite democracy fighters, ensure mass participation—particularly of youth and people from all sections of society—and select accessible venues for the exhibitions.
The programs are part of the BJP’s broader outreach effort to raise awareness and reaffirm its commitment to democratic values, while holding the Congress accountable for past actions.
