Congress MP Rakesh Rathod was arrested on Thursday during a press conference on charges of rape. Rathod is an MP from UP's Sitapur constituency.

A case was filed against him based on the complaint of a woman who had accused him of rape on January 15.

The woman in her complaint alleged that Rathore raped her several times over the last four years, promising to marry her and make her political career.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court denied his request for anticipatory bail.

Before this, on January 23, the MP-MLA court in Sitapur had also rejected his plea for anticipatory bail.

Meanwhile, the woman has also provided call details and call recordings to the police, according to a report by PTI.

According to a report by the Times Of India, in a complaint to the Superintendent of Police in Sitapur, the woman shared her painful story. She said her connection with the MP started in 2018 when he offered her a political role with his support.

He gained her trust and made her the Women's District President of the Tailik Mahasangh. However, in March 2020, she accused him of trapping her in his house and raping her.

After that, he allegedly promised to marry her and help her politically to keep her quiet, but he continued to abuse her. She also claimed that after becoming an MP in 2024, he forced her to sign blank papers, threatened to kill her, and said she would always be his mistress.
