The Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC) will conduct public hearings between July 7 and 17 on the proposed 30 per cent hike in electricity tariffs for the financial year 2025–26. The hearings will follow the Commission’s recent acceptance of the revised Annual Revenue Requirement (ARR) proposals submitted by power distribution companies.
The revised ARR shows an increased loss of Rs 19,600 crore for the current financial year—up from the earlier estimate of Rs 10,000 crore. To compensate for this deficit, the power companies have proposed a substantial hike in electricity tariffs. The new rates, if approved, are expected to be implemented from September.

The Commission has scheduled separate hearings for each distribution company:
-Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam – July 7 in Lucknow
-Kesco – July 9 in Kanpur
-Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam – July 11 in Varanasi
-Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam – July 15 in Agra
-Noida Power Company – July 16 in Greater Noida
-Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam – July 17 in Meerut
As per the ERC’s directive, all power companies have been instructed to publish the revised proposals in newspapers and upload them on their respective departmental websites. Consumers can file objections or suggestions within 21 days of the advertisement's publication.
Significantly, the state has not seen a power tariff revision since September 2019.
The Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Consumer Council will actively participate in all hearings. Council President and State Advisory Committee member Awadhesh Kumar Verma stated that he will personally attend each session to raise concerns about high tariffs, privatisation, and inefficiencies in the power distribution system.
