Electricity workers across the country are set to observe a symbolic strike on July 9 to protest against the proposed privatisation of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam and Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam in Uttar Pradesh. The announcement was made by the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers, which has also sent formal notices to the Chief Ministers of all states and the Union Power Minister.

Before the symbolic strike, a nationwide protest has already been scheduled for July 2, as part of the ongoing agitation against the privatisation of electricity distribution across 42 districts of Uttar Pradesh covered by the two discoms.

To ensure widespread participation, central office bearers of the Vidyut Karamchari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti are touring various districts to mobilise electricity employees. As part of this campaign, public meetings are scheduled at Jhansi and Parichha Thermal Power Projects on June 30, followed by gatherings at Kanpur KESCO and Panki Thermal Power Project on July 1.

On July 2, massive demonstrations are planned across all districts and power projects of the state under the banner of the nationwide protest.

In meetings held on Sunday at various locations, power sector employees passed a resolution stating that if tenders for the privatisation of Purvanchal and Dakshinanchal discoms are floated, a mass ‘Jail Bharo Andolan’ (voluntary arrest movement) will be launched in all districts and power project sites.
