The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation has submitted a proposed tariff schedule to the Electricity Regulatory Commission for the current financial year, aiming to increase energy and fixed charges while reducing the number of consumption slabs. If implemented, the revised rates are expected to hit consumers with higher electricity loads the hardest.
Under the new proposal, a household with a one-kilowatt connection using up to 100 units will be charged Rs 8.40 per unit, compared to the current effective rate of Rs 6.60 per unit. In contrast, a five-kilowatt connection consuming 200 units will face a per-unit rate of Rs 12, and with electricity duty included, the total cost could rise to Rs 13 per unit.
Avadhesh Verma, President of the Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Consumer Council, criticised the proposed hike, stating that consumers are in for a “big shock” if the changes are approved. He cited comparisons between the existing and proposed tariffs to illustrate the significant financial impact:
-100 units on 1 kW connection: Current bill Rs 660- Proposed bill Rs 840
-200 units on 2 kW connection: Current bill Rs 1,345- Proposed bill Rs 1,830
-300 units usage: Current bill Rs 2,055 → Proposed bill Rs 2,830
-500 units on 5 kW connection: Current bill Rs 3,575- Proposed bill Rs 5,000
-200 units consumption (higher load): Current bill Rs 1,675- Proposed bill Rs 2,400

Verma emphasised that the present maximum domestic electricity rate is Rs 8.38 per unit, but under the proposed structure, it could climb to Rs 12 per unit, excluding duty. With the inclusion of the electricity duty, the total rate could surge to Rs 13 per unit, placing a considerable burden on household budgets.
