Following extensive track and bridge repairs, trains on the Lucknow–Kanpur corridor will now operate at a maximum speed of 120 km/h, cutting the journey time between the two cities to 40–45 minutes. Previously, the trip took between 1¼ to 1½ hours.
Key improvements include the repaired old Ganga Bridge, where train speeds have risen from 10 km/h to 45 km/h. To facilitate this upgrade, a nine-hour daily mega block was implemented to install H-beam sleepers on the bridge, and the work was completed ahead of schedule.

Concurrently, track repairs along the Kanpur–Lucknow route were finalized, allowing superfast trains—such as the Lucknow Junction Swarn Shatabdi Express, Chitrakoot Express, and IRCTC Tejas Express—to be tested at higher speeds with positive results.
Kanpur Central Director Ashutosh Singh stated that efforts to boost operating speeds have been underway since December 2024, when railway officials inspected this section. With the recent upgrades, average train speeds on the route will reach 120 km/h in June, greatly benefiting the 50,000 daily passengers who commute between Kanpur and Lucknow.
The enhanced infrastructure and increased speeds are expected to ease congestion and provide a smoother, faster commute for both local and long-distance travelers.
