Uttar Pradesh: At least 11 people died in a major accident that took place in Lucknow's Gonda district when a Bolero carrying devotees to the Prithvinath temple overturned and fell into a canal on Sunday morning. The vehicle, carrying 15 people, lost control near the Saryu Canal bridge in Rehra village on the Parasarai-Alaval Deoria road. According to police, the bodies were recovered from the canal, and four people were rescued safely.

PM Modi has announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for the families of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 for the injured in the Gonda accident. CM Yogi Adityanath has expressed condolences, directed swift relief efforts, and announced Rs 5 lakh assistance for the victims' families.

PM Modi said, "Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to an accident in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the mishap. May the injured recover soon. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM."

The devotees were residents of Sihagaon, under the jurisdiction of the Motiganj police station, and were headed to the temple for a visit. Among them was Prahlad Gupta, who was traveling with his family and friends in the Bolero. Police and administrative officials are currently investigating the cause of the accident.

SP Gonda, Vineet Jaiswal said, "Upon receiving information, local villagers and Police initiated a rescue operation. Four people, including the driver, were rescued alive. 11 bodies have been retrieved by the Police. The four people who are alive have been sent to CHC. Panchayatnama and postmortem of the bodies will be done for which it has been sent to District Hospital. CMO has directed all officials to reach the spot and carry out rescue and relief operations and proper medical treatment to the injured. A compensation has also been announced."

In a separate incident, Five people, including a six-year-old child, died when a car they were traveling in lost control and fell into a ditch in Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi district. The incident occurred around 3 am on Saturday, May 31, 2025, while the group was returning from a wedding. 

Shahabad Circle Officer Anuj Mishra said the car overturned on Alamnagar road, leaving 11 people seriously injured. The victims were rushed to a community health centre, where doctors declared five of them dead. The injured were later referred to the district hospital after receiving first aid.

All the injured persons were immediately brought to a community health centre, where doctors declared five people dead, including a child. The injured have been referred to the district hospital after being administered first-aid."

The deceased have been identified as Jitendra (22), Akash (18), Siddharth (6), Ramu (35), and Jauhari (40), all residents of the Pali police station area in Hardoi. Police confirmed that the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the accident.
