Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh government has made the modernisation of electricity services a key priority, with a major focus on expanding the smart meter network across the state. Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) is rapidly installing smart meters in all districts as part of this mission to ensure transparent, secure, and world-class power services for every consumer.
So far, over 62.65 lakh smart meters have been installed, while the state has set a target of more than 3.09 crore installations. Officials said the smart meter system, based on secure and consumer-friendly technology, is significantly improving convenience, transparency, and energy management across the state.
Unlike traditional electronic meters, smart meters enable real-time reading and online billing, reducing human intervention and eliminating errors in electricity bills. The initiative has brought major improvements in service delivery for consumers, from accurate billing to better monitoring of consumption.
Key Advantages for Consumers
-Accurate, transparent billing: Real-time readings remove the scope for incorrect or estimated bills.
-Reduction in electricity theft: Automatic transfer of readings to servers prevents tampering and helps curb power theft.
-Convenience at home: Consumers can track usage, pay bills, and manage accounts online without visiting electricity offices.
-Real-time consumption monitoring: Users can check their electricity use through an app or portal and adjust usage as needed.
-Prepaid option (where applicable): Consumers can recharge in advance and use electricity as per their budget, similar to mobile prepaid plans.
-Instant alerts on faults: Smart meters provide immediate notifications about power cuts or faults, enabling faster restoration.
-Better load management: Automated load analysis helps streamline supply and distribution across the network.
