The 38-kilometer-long Tarighat-Bara National Highway 124 C, which connects to the neighboring state of Bihar, is set to undergo a lush green transformation. The Forest Department has decided to develop the stretch into a 'Green Highway.' Under the Forest Deposit Scheme (Van Jama Yojana), work has commenced in full swing to plant various species of fruit-bearing, shade-giving, ornamental, and medicinal trees on both sides of the road.

Phase 1: Revatipur To Mednipur

According to the Forest Department, the first phase involves plantation along a 12-kilometer stretch from Revatipur to Mednipur on both sides of the highway. This initial phase will incur a cost of Rs 10 lakh, during which a total of 450 saplings will be planted.

The selected species include Mango, Peepal, Mahogany, Imli (Tamarind), Mahua, Neem, Pakar, Banyan, Jamun and Bel. To ensure the safety and survival of these saplings, iron T-guards are also being installed. Officials stated that the entire plantation project along the highway will be completed in multiple phases by March 2026.

Environmental And Aesthetic Benefits

Upon the completion of this project, commuters using the highway will be able to enjoy a scenic, green route. Additionally, the initiative will significantly aid in controlling air pollution and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the highway. Notably, prior to the widening of this highway in 2016, thousands of trees located within a 20-foot radius on both sides were felled.

Restoration After 8 Years

It has taken the department nearly eight years after the highway's construction to initiate the replantation of these trees. Regional Forest Officer Jayashankar Prasad Verma confirmed that under the Forest Deposit Scheme, the work has begun in the first phase between Revatipur and Mednipur.

He further reiterated that the entire project is scheduled for completion by March 2026. Forest Inspector Ashok Kumar Yadav, Forest Assistant Ajit Kumar Rai, and Forest Assistant Shamuddin were present during the initiation of the drive.
