Following the Bihar elections, the Election Commission is conducting the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list.
The SIR process has already commenced in 12 states. Under this initiative, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are visiting every polling booth area to provide voters with Enumeration Forms at their doorsteps. This time, the forms also request mobile numbers. However, cyber fraudsters have become active under the guise of the SIR drive, prompting the Election Commission to issue a safety advisory.
The Election Commission has issued a warning to voters across the country. It has explicitly stated that no One-Time Password (OTP) is required while filling out the SIR form. Furthermore, there is no need to install any mobile app or APK file on your phone for this process.
Beware Of OTPs And APK Files
The Election Commission states that cybercriminals are targeting voters using the SIR form as a pretext. Below are the methods scammers are using:
Fake Calls And OTPs: Cyber thugs are calling voters posing as BLOs or Election Commission employees. They claim that the voter's mobile number or other information is not updated in the SIR records. Subsequently, they ask for an OTP ostensibly to complete the SIR process, thereby defrauding people.
Fake APK Files: Scammers are sending links to fake APK (Android Application Package) files via SMS or WhatsApp, naming them 'SIR' or 'Voter Helpline.' As soon as this app is installed on the phone, scammers gain full control of the device. They can access the phone to steal all data and even empty bank accounts.
How To Avoid SIR Scams?
Do Not Share OTPs: An OTP is never required to fill out an SIR form or update voter information. If anyone asks for an OTP in the name of SIR, disconnect the call and refuse immediately. If you receive repeated calls or WhatsApp messages, report them to the police.
Avoid Fake APKs or Apps: Do not install any app links or APK files received via WhatsApp or SMS in the name of SIR. By following these precautions, you can protect yourself from scammers.

When you fill out the form, you give your phone number.
You may get a call saying your SIR process will be incomplete without an OTP, or you will go to jail if you do not provide it.
NEVER GIVE THEM THE OTP.
