The Uttar Pradesh government plans to introduce 200 electric buses across 10 routes each in Lucknow and Kanpur by the end of next year. The Directorate of Urban Transport has issued a tender for private operators to run the e-buses, with applications open until 2 pm on September 30.
Interested operators can apply online at https://etender.up.nic.in. Under the contract, a prototype e-bus must be presented within 90 days, while full operations are expected to commence within one year.
The cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, had approved private operation of e-buses to make urban transport cleaner, safer, and greener.
The model requires private operators to run the buses at their own expense under a net-cost contract. The government will set fares and provide electricity connections for charging, while operators must arrange for bus procurement, drivers, conductors, and charging infrastructure.
Contracts will span 12 years, and operators can bid for one or more routes. Depot sites will be allocated by the respective Municipal Corporation or City Transport Authority.
