UP Weather Alert: Uttar Pradesh is facing an intensifying cold spell, with no respite in sight for the next few days. On Tuesday, thick fog and haze persisted throughout the day, obscuring any trace of the sun. The region is bracing for continued harsh weather conditions, with the icy winds set to deepen the chill and fog expected to cause further disruptions.
The meteorological department has issued a warning, advising people to take precautions and to only venture outside if absolutely necessary.
The extreme cold, combined with dense fog in the early morning hours, brought life to a near standstill. Visibility was so poor that by 11 am, markets and roads were largely deserted. Vehicles that did venture out moved slowly, with headlights on, navigating cautiously through the thick fog that blanketed highways, main roads, and connecting routes. Travel became increasingly difficult for many.
In response to the severe weather, people stayed indoors. Typically busy crossroads and markets remained quiet, with shops opening later than usual and very few customers in sight. Schoolchildren and office-goers were visibly affected by the chill, many shivering in the cold. Stray animals sought refuge from the bitter temperatures in vacant verandas and doorways.

The absence of public warming fires exacerbated the situation for workers, who were observed burning paper and plastic to keep warm. Disaster expert Arun Kumar Mishra explained that the persistent fog was likely to continue until December 20, owing to a western disturbance. The district's maximum temperature was recorded at 18.9 degrees C, with a minimum of 8.4 degrees C. No significant changes in temperature are expected in the near future.

Earlier, the severe weather contributed to a deadly vehicle pile-up on the Yamuna Expressway on Tuesday morning. Four people were killed and more than two dozen others injured when at least seven buses and several smaller vehicles collided in dense fog around 4:30 am. Authorities have warned of further travel hazards as the fog continues to blanket the region.
